DMNS Guitar Exhibit

I partnered with Fathom Studios to create this animation for the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The Process

My first step was figuring out how to animate the sound waves coming from behind the guitar. I ended up using multiple splines with a couple deformers applied to each, inside of a cloner. I used slightly different animation speeds on each of the noises in the deformers to make it feel like the sound waves were rippling out from the center.

Next was animating the guitar outlines and formulas. I ended up animating them in After Effects, rending them as sequences and using them as texture mattes in Cinema4D. I then placed those textures on planes that were positioned in the correct places. Above you can see I also used cylinders to place the animated textures on the knobs of the Flying V guitar.

The last shot was the first shot, of the opening sound wave. I again used a spline with a spline wrap inside a cloner and to give it some extra life I added a deformer with an animated noise.
